Maja is German born textiler, architect, designer and knitter living in Iceland since 2000. She holds a M.Arch from Arizona State University. We are very excited at Rammagerðin to host her at our space, from 6th til 10th of May at Laugavegur 31,at Kirkjuhúsið during Design March-HönnunarMars

There is a magic to transforming raw Icelandic wool into yarn, dyeing it indigo blue and weaving it into cloth like for the work “Verðandi”. Using age old methods and recipes Maja Siska experiences this material metamorphosis with her own hands and eyes, resulting in a cloth that reflects the process. The making connects her to the past and creates the future, and it helps her to feel rooted in her time and place.

In German, Maja´s first language, the word “begreifen” means both to touch and to understand. The act of making with her own hands is central to her work and motivation to create. Maja is a textiler with a background in architecture who has lived in Iceland since 2000.

For “Álagavefur” she works with found objects and farm debris like horsehair, baler twine, feathers… all material from her immediate surrounding in the South of Iceland, while wool quite literally holds it all together.
