Icelandic Lopapeysa

A lopapeysa or Icelandic sweater is an Icelandic style of sweater originating in the early or mid-20th century, at a time when imports had displaced older and more traditional Icelandic clothing and people began to search for new ways to use the plentiful native wool.

We are especially proud to offer 100% Icelandic wool sweaters, hand-knitted here in Iceland. Each sweater bears the signature of the woman who knitted it, many of whom have been knitting for Rammagerðin for years.

The icelandic wool is unique in it’s composition as it consists of two fibres, Inner fibres which provide insolation and outer fibres which provide water-repellency.  Together, these two fibres make a unique lightweight water-repellent and breathable wool.

Wool Washing guide

I stained my wool product. How do i take care of it?

Spot cleaning: For small stains, you often don't need a full wash, dab with a cloth and a little wool wash diluted in water, working from the outside of the stain in.

How do i dry Icelandic wool?

Drying

  • Lay the item on a clean towel, roll it up to squeeze out excess water, then unroll.
  • Reshape it to its original dimensions and dry flat on a fresh towel or drying rack, away from direct sun or heat.
  • Never hang wet wool — it'll stretch out of shape.
How do i wash Icelandic wool?

Hand washing (recommended)

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm to cool water (around 30°C/86°F) — never hot, and avoid big temperature swings.
  2. Add a wool-specific detergent (like Woolite, Eucalan, or a no-rinse wool wash) or a mild, pH-neutral soap.
  3. Submerge the item and gently press water through it — don't rub, scrub, twist, or agitate. Agitation + heat is what causes felting.
  4. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Drain and press out soapy water (don't wring). Refill with clean water at the same temperature and rinse by pressing, not swishing.
