Bjarni Sigurdsson was born in Reykjavík in 1965 and graduated from Aarhus Kunstakademi in Denmark with a degree in ceramics in 2000. Previously, Bjarni worked in the banking sector. Bjarni worked in ceramics in Denmark until 2007 when he moved to Iceland.
In Iceland, he has had his own business as well as selling his work to other parties in Iceland, the United States and Denmark.
Bjarni's works range from plates and cups, to large vases and wall art. The variety of his works is very great.
The main characteristic of the works are the glazes that Bjarni makes himself from scratch and works with hundreds of glazes that give tens of thousands of possibilities for new textures and results for each glaze. However, he himself has only managed to use a fraction of the possibilities that exist with the glazes, as the possibilities are countless.
He also designs and prepares all of his own forms that he works with and produces some of his works for individual companies and stores.
All the works are unique as they are all marked according to a specific structure so nothing is the same and all works are recorded and all of Bjarni's works that he has done from his studies to the present day have been recorded in books.
Bjarni currently works in his studio in Hafnarfjörður, which underwent major changes after expansion in 2020.
Where is your studio located:
The studio is located at Hrauntunga 20 in Hafnarfjörður.
Where did you study:
Aarhus Academy of Fine Arts, Denmark.
What is the philosophy behind your design:
Nature is my inspiration and is most evident in the glazes and their mixing.
Special characteristics of Icelandic design:
I work on mixing them together and destroying and rebuilding them to achieve that texture and color and so on. In my opinion, Icelandic design is characterized by a great wealth of imagination and it is also young and raw.
