The Christmas Cat 2023

Rammagerðin's Christmas gifts for 2023 were designed by Björn Steinar Blumenstein. Björn is a unique designer in that he puts a lot of effort into working with recycled materials and that the objects he designs have a purpose. Björn says that the project was a challenge for him as a designer, as appearance has been a secondary factor in his career, while the purpose and benefits of his projects are a priority.

Björn injured his leg in the middle of the design process and has begun a long recovery process. However, that did not stop him from completing the project and delivering it with flying colors. “I was not able to produce the mold until after I injured myself. It took me a while to figure out what material I was going to make it out of. It was an experimental process where I was experimenting with wood, plastic and clay. The shape is a bit inspired by the tools I was using to be able to produce the cat out of clay. I was building myself a simple tool to be able to make these clay pulses from a kind of putty gun. The shape comes a lot from there.”

Rammagerðin's Christmas Cat is an annual collaboration between Rammagerðin and different designers each year. The Christmas Cat will adorn one of four window displays in our store at Skólavörðustígur 12, Christmas 2023.
